Dentures Highland CA

At East Highland Dental, restorative dentistry is one of our office specialties. One way we help restore a patient’s smile is with dentures. Full and partial dentures are custom made replacement teeth. Unlike a dental implant, you can take out your dentures and put them back in your mouth as needed. Dentures will take some time to get used to and won’t feel like your natural teeth. Today’s dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever before.

Benefits Of Full & Partial Dentures

The foundation of denture benefits is replacing your missing teeth. Having your teeth replaced leads to a lot of improvements in quality of life.

First, there’s the aesthetic improvement. Getting replacement teeth allows one to smile again, which will improve self-confidence. Also, having missing teeth can make you appear older due to sagging facial muscles. With denture support, your facial muscles will no longer sag.

Next is functionality improvement. Replacement teeth will allow you to eat normally again. You will have the freedom to eat whatever you desire. Any limitations before will be gone.

How Exactly Do Dentures Work?

First, Dr. Shah will create impressions of your mouth. He then sends the impressions to the dental lab, where they are custom made. The dentures will come with a flesh-colored base that fits over your gums. They will come in two parts, a top and a bottom piece. Top portion comes with a base that covers the roof of your mouth. The bottom part will be shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue. Dr. Shah will go over which of the three denture types below will be best for you.

Types Of Available Dentures

Traditional full dentures consist of full upper and lower parts. They’re best for patients who have little to no teeth left. After removing any last teeth and gum tissues have healed, the full dentures are placed.
This denture is precisely how the name sounds. Their dentures are immediately put on after the last of your teeth is extracted. The dentist will have taken your jaw measurements on a prior visit. Immediate dentures are great in a sense you’re never without teeth. A minor drawback is that they need relining several months after insertion. Relining is necessary due to your bone healing and reshaping, which causes the denture to loosen.
Partial dentures, as the name implies, aren’t full dentures. This restoration uses a metal framework to attach to your natural teeth present. In some cases, a crown is needed to act as an anchor for this type of denture.
It’s common for patients to feel uncomfortable and awkward initially with their dentures. Your facial muscles and tongue will need time to learn how to hold the denture in place. So eating and speaking naturally again will need patience and practice. This practice period can take weeks or even months until one feels normal using the dentures.
Most patients report their dentures lasting about seven to ten years. Due to normal wear and tear, your denture will either need rebasing, relining, or be remade. Keep in mind, too, that our mouths change as we age. It’s these natural changes that cause our dentures to loosen and, in some instances, uncomfortable to use.

At East Highland Dental, we recommend the following to maximize your denture use.

  • Take extra caution when handling dentures, especially cleaning them. Use a towel or water basin. Dentures are delicate and can break if dropped.
  • Avoid drying out your dentures. Place in water or denture solution when not using them.
  • Brush the dentures daily to remove any food deposits.
  • Daily gum, palate, and tongue brushing before putting on the dentures
  • Seek a dentist immediately if the denture becomes damaged. Trying to fix it yourself can make the damage worse.
